Founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, this wonderful city had a key role in the Spanish Empire for almost three centuries. Today, Cartagena de Indias´ colonial walled city and fortress is designated a UNESCO Heritage site. Its harbour was a major trading port and its military fortifications were one of the most complete defense system in South America.
